The Void

There is hell, this is worse

synopsis

When a mysterious and violent cult threatens to breach an isolated hospital, a lone police officer and a group of staff band together to fortify themselves within its walls. But as they prepare for the fight of their lives, they will discover the real terror is already inside.

Combining the aesthetic attitude of modern horror cinema as it emerged in the 1970’s with the sophisticated practical effects that ruled the creature features of the 1980’s and early 90’s, directors Konstanski and Gillespie will conjure up a terrifying tale with all the nightmarish tension and intense claustrophobia of John Carpenter’s The Thing.

legends are born to win

synopsis

seve ballesteros was perhaps the most spectacular golfer to have played the game. his story is a rags-to-riches tale of overcoming adversity at every turn. from humble beginnings in a sleepy fishing village in northern spain, seve blazed a stirring trail to worldwide glory.

he became the youngest open championship winner in the modern era and was the first european to triumph at the masters – a victory which fostered a sea change in the game, opening golf up globally both in terms of its protagonists and audience. seve also single-handedly changed the ryder cup in terms of importance and competition, making the biennial battle one of the most anticipated events in sport.

seve’s charisma rivalled arnold palmer’s while his good looks added a movie star appeal that gave his towering talent a truly transcendent quality.

battling antiquated authority figures was par for seve’s course, while his inspiring fight against a brain tumour brought a bittersweet denouement to his romantic journey. but as we will discover, his spirit remains alive and relevant.

cast and crew

producer stephen evans’ glittering career includes henry v, much ado about nothing, bafta nominated the madness of king george and confessions of a dangerous mind.

edited by tariq anwar (academy award-nominated for the king’s speech and american beauty) with original score by academy award winner stephen warbeck (shakespeare in love), and the full support of the seve ballesteros foundation, seve combines dramatic recreations with electrifying archive footage to tell his incredible rags to riches story; from humble beginnings on the beaches of spain – where aged six he taught himself the game with a broken 3 iron strapped to a stick – to becoming world number one and the greatest golfer of a generation.

Welcome to the Jungle

Unleash your inner beast!

synopsis

Adam Brody plays Chris, an ex-boy scout who is a weakling in his workplace and regularly bullied by Phil (Huebel). When the whole office is sent on a wilderness retreat in an excruciating team building exercise headed up by unhinged ex Marine “Storm” (Van Damme), Storm is promptly attacked by a wild cougar, Phil assumes leadership, and chaos quickly follows. It’s up to Chris to man up and release his inner beast… or they may be stuck there forever.

In the spirit of “lost in the wilderness” comedies such as Tropic Thunder and Without a Paddle, and workplace comedies like Employee of the Month and Waiting … Throw in the warm wit of Apatow and Welcome to the Jungle is a rare beast in today’s market: A comedy that delivers on the laughs – both the high and the lowbrow.

Sunshine Superman

A film about falling

synopsis

Sunshine Superman is a love story about what it feels like to fall, first uncontrollably, then willingly, and then finally ecstatically. The film traces the genesis of BASE jumping (the act of leaping from buildings, antennas, bridges and cliffs before saving your life with a parachute) an act that many people would consider suicide. Yet it is not at all a film about death. It is about the essence of life, of freedom, of what it feels like, for a moment, to defy gravity, and to fly.

The film tells the story of how one man, Carl Boenish, pioneered, popularised, and died creating BASE jumping. Carl embarks on a journey to realise his dream: foot-launched human flight. His journey is filled with incredible achievements and daunting setbacks with the distinct possibility of death at every turn. Suspense exists in almost every jump being illegal, and potentially lethal.

Sunshine Superman is also a larger-than-life love story. In 1980, Carl met and married Jean Katherine Campbell, who soon became the first female BASE jumper in a small but expanding community that was created by the activity of doing an illegal, death defying sport. The film will chronicle some of the first jumps, arrests, and triumphs of BASE’s early participants.

Carl died BASE jumping in Norway, the day after a World Record jump. Three days later his wife Jean jumped from the same Norwegian cliff, landing safely.

The story of Carl and Jean ends in Carl’s death, but the story of BASE jumping continues, proliferating around the world. The next frontier is wing suit flying. Sunshine Superman takes a small group of young BASE jumpers back to Norway where Carl died to show how the sport has evolved and how one man’s dream has become reality even after his death.

The film uses Carl’s astounding personal archive of film and audio recordings along with recreations to tell the story of Carl’s journey to invent BASE jumping, find true love and die in the act of pursuing his dream, whilst celebrating the human spirit.

Bad Johnson

It's a schlong story

synopsis

Rich Johnson (CAM GIGANDET) is a charismatic, serial womanizer. Young, arrogant, handsome, cocky, and in great physical shape – he’s the kind of jerk you hate but secretly wish you were.

Women practically throw themselves at him, and Rich simply cannot control his penis, which seems to have a mind of its own. After being caught cheating and ruining yet another promising relationship, Rich, in a chastened moment of regret, wishes his penis would just leave him alone.

Sometimes you need to be careful about what you wish for…. for when Rich wakes the next morning he finds that his penis has gone. Decamped. Exited the building. It has literally vamoosed!

Rich’s day goes from bad to worse when he discovers that his penis has in fact taken human form as RP (NICK THUNE), who quickly moves into his apartment. Good-looking and charming, they initially hit it off, but Rich soon realises that RP embodies all the worst aspects of his personality: he’s selfish, oversexed, irresponsible, and aggressive. Rich has not only lost his penis…he is living with a magnified version of his alter ego.

As Rich finds himself falling hard for new love interest Lindsay, he must figure out how to overcome his johnson while at the same time learning how to be a more balanced, complete man, which will ultimately become the key to making everything right again…

Cast and Crew

Starring Cam Gigandet (Twilight, Easy A) and rising comedy star Nick Thune, and directed by Huck Botko (Mail Order Wife, The Virginity Hit), bad Johnson combines the raucous humour of recent box office smash Ted with the body swap genre of Freaky Friday and 13 going on 30. The result is a hilarious, and indisputably original comedy which gets to the heart of what it means to control one’s desires.

for the locals on erin island, it's the final round

synopsis

On Erin Island, an idyllic rural fishing village off the coast of Ireland, Ciarán O’Shea, the charming but heavy-drinking local policeman, is tasked with greeting Lisa Nolan, a straightlaced young officer who has just arrived off the ferry. Not that there’s much for them to do, aside from dealing with the occasional drunk, and that’s usually O’Shea himself.

But strange doings are afoot: the crew of a fishing boat disappears, whales start appearing dead on the shore, a local lobsterman catches a strange tentacled creature in his trap. Soon it becomes clear to O’Shea and Nolan that there’s something big out there, and that it’s hungry. It’s time to rally the villagers, arm the troops…and head to the pub.

The People Vs. George Lucas

synopsis

We all love Star Wars…until George Lucas went and ruined it! The passion the original Star Wars trilogy inspires in its fans is unparalleled, but when it comes to George Lucas himself, many have found their ardour has cooled into a complicated love-hate relationship. This hilarious, heartfelt documentary delves deep into Lucas’ cultural legacy asking all the tough questions: Has Lucas betrayed his masterwork? Should he just have left the original trilogy alone? Is The Phantom Menace so bad it should carry a health warning? Using interviews taken from over 700 hours of footage and peppered with extraordinary Star Wars recreations lovingly immortalised in needlepoint, Lego, claymation and puppets, above all this film asks the question: Who truly owns that galaxy far, far away? The man who created it or the fans who love it?

Futebol (series)

one country, one game

synopsis

A fascinating, enthralling, and profoundly moving social commentary on Brazil and the national obsession with the beautiful game and its stars.

Since 1958, Brazil has dominated world football through a style based on outrageous skill and amazing ball control. They have won the World Cup a record five times, and with legendary players such as Didi, Zizinho, Garrincha, Pelé, Tostão, Romario, Zico, Ronaldo and Ronaldhino, have taken international football to unequalled heights. When asked why, Pelé explains that after learning to play football barefoot on the rocky slopes of the favelas with an orange as a ball, playing on a proper pitch is easy.

Favela Rising

their music fuelled a movement. his message fought a war

synopsis

A man emerges from the slums of Rio to lead the Afro-Reggae cultural movement in this award-winning doc, released by Thinkfilm in North America.

Anderson Sá grew up in the worst of Rio’s favelas ruled over by drug lords whose average age of death was 14 to 25. In 1993, after a cop killing, the military police retaliated by brutally, and randomly, murdering 21 innocent people, one of whom was Sá’s younger brother. Rather than let anger defeat him, he made a decision to try and stop the cycle of violence. Mobilising friends, Sá started a band, Afro-Reggae, to perform his upbeat, yet courageously honest music, which featured lyrics about police brutality. Before long Afro-Reggae was a whole movement, crossing favelas previously at war and luring kids away from guns and drugs and towards music and self-respect.

Things can get sticky when you're a teenager

synopsis

The charming, funny and much lauded debut from Alexis Dos Santos (Unmade Beds) premiered Toronto 2006 and was released in North America by Picture This!

A small town in vast, empty Patagonia – the gawky Lucas, a 15 year old timebomb of hormones, boredom and family alienation, hangs out with his hunky and horny best friend Nacho and bespectacled mouse Andrea. The threesome cope with the trials of burgeoning adolescence by getting high and getting off, mostly, in variations, with each other. Featuring music by Violent Femmes.

From International cult magazine Vice, the tale of Jesco 'the dancing outlaw' White - part angel, part devil, part elvis

synopsis

Jesco White’s drugs of choice are gasoline and lighter fluid, plus the high he gets from performing the wild mountain dancing steps taught him by his daddy. But it’s reform school and a lunatic asylum that teach Jesco how to fight, and fight he does. Redneck exploitation is gorgeously reinvented as Jesco explodes from one burst of trailertrashing rage to the next. Dingy trailers, guns and moonshine – the trademarks of West Virginia life – are celebrated, alongside a psychobilly soundtrack, as savage exotica in this brutal and demented hillbilly saga.

The Infidel

Is it a Muslim? Is it a Jew? No! It's... The Infidel

synopsis

UK box office hit The Infidel, a comedy of “ethnic proportions”, stars Omid Djalili as a London Muslim cab driver who discovers he’s adopted, and Jewish.

Boosted by a fantastically creative campaign including a Facebook competition to find “which religion is the funniest?” and a spoof viral of the Paranormal Activity trailer, the film was released in April 2010 by Revolver. Hot on the heels of a sold-out 3,500-seat charity premiere, it stormed onto an opening weekend screen average of $7,000. A platform release, The Infidel doubled its screens the following weekend and continues to hold screens throughout the UK. The film received its US launch at the recent Tribeca Film Festival where all screenings sold out in a day.

The Infidel was written by one of the UK’s foremost writers and comedians, David Baddiel, especially for Djalili, a familiar face from big budget fare including The Mummy and Gladiator. Also starring Richard Schiff (The West Wing) and Archie Panjabi (East is East, The Good Wife).

Cherry Tree Lane

Your worst fears have come home

synopsis

A disturbing and shocking cautionary tale that will make you think twice about opening your front door to strangers. A provocative new film from writer/director Paul Andrew Williams (London to Brighton).

Christine and Mike are an ordinary middle-class couple, living in what could be any house on any street. It’s an average evening as they prepare dinner, open a bottle of wine and bicker as they wait for their teenage son Sebastian to come home from football. A ring at the door is answered by Christine. A terrible scream and she reappears, a knife at her throat, a gang of teenagers at her back, who tie them both up. It seems Sebastian has snitched on one of them and they are here to exact the worst revenge imaginable to a parent, but in the sincere belief they hold the moral high ground – that this is the right thing to do. They settle in to wait for Sebastian to come home.

Dirty Girl

Some girls are born dirty

synopsis

Everyone remembers their high school Dirty Girl. Every high school has one, and Danielle is the Dirty Girl of Norman High. The year is 1987; the place is Norman, Oklahoma and floral print jeans and abstinence are all the rage. When Danielle’s outrageous behaviour gets her banished to Special Ed, she meets Clarke, a shy, gay closet- case with no friends. Forced together for a school project, they become unwilling and unfit parents to a bag of flour called “Joan”. Danielle is determined to get to LA to find the father she has never met. Clarke is desperate to escape being sent to military school by his homophobic dad. So, with no money but propelled by a glorious 80s soundtrack, the dysfunctional little family sets off for California to flee the small town that has kept them both from being their true selves.

cast and crew

Dirty Girl stars Juno Temple (Cracks, Year One, Atonement) as “dirty girl”, Danielle. Milla Jovovich (Resident Evil, Zoolander) co-stars as her hopeless “reformed slut” mother Sue-Ann, William H. Macy (Fargo) as Sue-Ann’s easily shockable Mormon fiancé Ray, Oscar®-winner Mary Steenburgen (Step Brothers) as Peggy, Clarke’s mousy mother, country and western music star Dwight Yoakam as Clarke’s homophobic father Joseph, three time Grammy award-winning country music star Tim McGraw (The Blind Side) as Danny and introducing Jeremy Dozier as Clarke.

Abe Sylvia, a former broadway dancer (including two years in Cats) and choreographer, retrained as a writer and director at UCLA film school where he won a slew of awards including Jack Nicholson’s Director Award. with a body of award-winning shorts plus commercials for Svedka Vodka, Coca-Cola, and Chrysler under his belt, Dirty Girl, which he also wrote, is his first feature. to view a selection of Abe’s work please visit www.abesylvia.com

synopsis

In February 2007 Martin Strel began an insane attempt to be the first person to swim the entire length of the world’s most dangerous river, the mighty Amazon. Martin is an endurance swimmer from Slovenia, who swims rivers – the Mississippi, the Danube and the Yangtze to date – to highlight their pollution to the world. Martin is also a rather overweight, horseburger-loving Slovenian in his fifties who drinks two bottles of red wine a day…even when swimming.
